Al Sharpton To Scrub Rap Lyrics Clean, Takes Battle To Detroit

Reverend Al Sharpton's campaign to eradicate sexist, racist and misogynistic lyrics from rap music hit Detroit on Saturday (June 2) planning to collect thousands of bars of soap as symbols of their effort.

As SOHH previously reported, Sharpton held a march in New York last month that stopped at various record label headquarters and challenged them to tone down their lyrics.

According to the Associated Press, Sharpton addressed a crowd of supporters outside the Motown Historical Museum stating it made sense to promote his campaign in Detroit because the NAACP leaders plan to conduct a mock funeral for the "N" word during the group's July convention in the city.

"The 1960s were the Motown sound and James Brown but they did not call us the 'n-word' and they did not degrade women," Sharpton declared.

Organizers said they plan to soon roll out the effort in Los Angeles. The bars of soap will be donated to shelters and halfway houses for women.
